Have you ever been to Austin? I’ve heard about how cool it is from friends and family for many years, and finally made my first there earlier this month. I love domestic travel, and had a total blast discovering some fun things around the city. Although I went for a work conference, I had some time to go out and see some sites (and eat some eats) each night and through the weekend. I’m excited to share a little of what I found with you in a few Austin trip posts. I spent my first couple of nights at the downtown Sheraton, which was a lovely hotel. It was fantastic to stay in the hotel where the conference was located so we just had to get ready and head downstairs each morning, and we were provided with breakfast and lunch. This opened up our afternoons and evenings for exploring and eating some of the city’s famous foods.

I was in awe of the beautiful capitol building. It really is the centerpiece of the downtown area, so historic and full of great architectural detail. It was so fun to photograph. I also fell for the gorgeous Victorian style homes that are sprinkled around the city. The one above was located on Cesar Chavez and so sweet! Austin has this interesting mix of beautiful, new, modern buildings and historical structures like the Paramount Theater, and The Driskill. It’s also known as the city of live music, so of course I had to get a photo with this super cool painted guitar.

Before my trip I crowd-sourced some recommendations from friends via Facebook and Instagram. One place that got rave reviews was La Barbecue, a sweet little BBQ food truck off of Cesar Chavez. We walked through downtown all the way to this little spot, a parking lot filled with gourmet food trucks. Their brisket was seriously incredible and a “must-eat” if you’re ever in the Austin area.

The weather in Austin was just gorgeous – in the eighties each day and 80% humidity. I was fully prepared for the humidity to drive me and my curly hair bonkers, but surprisingly I felt very comfortable the whole trip. I packed mostly light dresses and shorts and lived in my flat, neutral sandals. We had a delightful first evening exploring, walking the city, eating, and walking back through the beautifully lit downtown area back to our hotel. More from my trip to Austin coming up soon on the blog. Until then, have a great week!
