I had the recent opportunity to go to my first-ever Cirque du Soleil performance, and it was absolutely stunning! LUZIA, their latest Mexico-inspired show, features inspiringly creative sets, courageous and talented performers, beautiful song and dance, as well as a few laughs care of their resident clown. I’m excited to share some photos and stories from the show to inspire you to get some tickets for yourself for an awe-inspiring evening you won’t soon forget.

I have always wanted to go to a Cirque du Soleil show, and when I was asked to come and review it on opening night I knew it was the perfect opportunity. I took my best friend C. and we had the most amazing seats, front and center and close to all the action. Cirque du Soleil built a gorgeous gold and white big top at King County’s Marymoor Park in Redmond for this limited engagement.

LUZIA opens with an athletic performer running, flipping, and jumping on a massive treadmill that is part of a huge, round revolving stage packed with golden marigolds. It begins with a bang and never really lets up! This show is truly a thrill-a-minute surrealistic journey through an imaginary Mexico. With a series of grand visual surprises, breathtaking acrobatic performances, and inspiring sets and costumes it is sure to please everyone who attends.

LUZIA is full of non-stop thrills and action and showcases the talent of a wide range of performers including jugglers, aerialists, acrobats, gymnasts, singers, dancers and more! I absolutely loved the styling of all of the costumes and sets, and how each vignette paid homage to a distinct flavor of Mexican culture. It was truly a complete audio/visual experience!

The LUZIA sets took my breath away with a range of texture, color and vibrancy that clearly reflected Mexico. They changed throughout the show to accommodate the many different performers and the theme of each act. One moment the stage was covered in marigolds with a giant treadmill in the center. Before we knew it all of the marigolds had vanished and the center opened to reveal a pool. The next moment it was raining on stage. It was amazing how quickly and covertly stagehands and performers worked together to make these changes seamless throughout the show. I especially loved the aerialists who made use of the vertical space inside the big top as well as the water in some cases.

In addition to the amazing stunts, there were a few talented singers that really brought the theme of Mexico to life. As you can see from these detail shots, the costumes were absolutely stunning! They were elaborate, dreamy confections that not only complimented the performers, but added yet another visual pop of Mexican culture. Has Project Runway ever done a Cirque du Soleil challenge because they absolutely should! I wonder how long it would take to make something this intricate. Each costume was better than the last.

LUZIA marks the first time Cirque du Soleil presents a production under a big top featuring printed patterns directly related to the theme of the show. The patterns evoke the association between Cirque du Soleil (the sun) and Mexico (the word originates from Mtztli, meaning ‘moon,” and Xuctli, which means ‘middle’) and symbolize the meeting of two celestial bodies: the sun and the moon. It also features a set that completely revolves, jaw-dropping rain, and stunts that make use of every inch of the height of the big top!

There were so many amazing performances that it’s difficult to share a favorite, but the performers on the large hula hoops were absolutely remarkable! I was spellbound by their agility and grace when working with an object that to me appears so difficult to handle. It was truly mesmerizing!

LUZIA, a waking dream of Mexico, was everything I could have ever hoped for in a Cirque du Soleil show and I left wanting to see many more in the future. It’s open now at King County’s Marymoor Park in Redmond and there’s still time to get tickets! Performances run for a limited engagement through May 21, 2017. It’s also traveling to Denver, Chicago, and Atlanta in the coming months and you can find more information on their official tour schedule.
